The Opportunity

The department is seeking applications from experienced psychologists to join its Staff and Family Support Office, which provides professional advice and services to monitor and support staff wellbeing and performance across DFAT’s global network. This is a Canberra based position but may include domestic and international travel, including to high security threat locations. This recruitment process will also be used to develop a merit pool of candidates for future vacancies.

Our Ideal Candidates

We’re looking for high-performing people with skills and experience relevant to the department’s enabling services operations.

Full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia is mandatory.

Our ideal candidates will be:

  • Outcome-focused and have a collaborative and engaging style. 
  • Accustomed to operating in fast-paced environments, managing competing priorities and responding flexibly to change. 
  • Able to exercise a considerable degree of independence and demonstrate strategic thinking, demonstrated by contributing to team planning and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. 
  • An effective clinician and be competent in administering psychometric tests, conducting suitability assessments, and providing feedback on risk-related matters. 
  • Highly competent in the provision of short-term clinical interventions, including counselling, crisis support (including after hours), training and other capability development activities (to both Australian staff and locally engaged staff)
  • Experienced in the identification and management of psychosocial hazards in the workplace and be able to make recommendations that balance individual needs, with those of the of the organisation. 
  • Able to display both initiative and judgement when interpreting policy and procedures and exhibit a high level of cultural sensitivity. 
  • Able to communicate effectively (oral and written) and demonstrate strong stakeholder management skills. 
  • Capable of building and maintaining productive working relationships within teams, across the organisation and with other agencies.

A Master’s degree in psychology or higher is desirable.

The key duties of the position include:

Your duties and responsibilities will be aligned to the relevant APS Work Level Standards.


Your key duties will include:

  • Managing and contributing to the development and delivery of specialist presentations, and mental health and wellbeing related interventions
  • Administering, interpreting, and reporting on a range of psychometric assessments to inform suitability regarding high-risk roles;
  • Providing advice to managers on promoting mentally healthy workplaces, including the identification of psychosocial hazards and controls to address;
  • Providing professional counselling (face to face and via telehealth) to all DFAT staff and partners/spouses of officers posted overseas; and
  • Assisting in the formulation of management plans in response to personal and workplace incidents / emergencies / situations, either in Australia or overseas.

   

Eligibility

Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS) unless the Agency Head has agreed otherwise, in writing.

Other:

Full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia is mandatory.

Depending on the role into which you are placed, you may also be required to obtain and maintain a Working with Vulnerable People/Children registration (or equivalent).
