NovoPsych Research Director – Psychometrics & Psychological Assessment

NovoPsych is a leading psychometrics company building world-class psychological assessment tools used by mental health clinicians and services internationally. We sit at the intersection of clinical practice, rigorous measurement science, and modern software.

You’ll join a high-calibre team of PhDs, software developers, and clinical innovators who take research seriously — and ship it into real-world clinical workflows.

The opportunity

We’re hiring a Research Director to lead and accelerate NovoPsych’s research agenda: fundamental R&D, novel measurement approaches, and the translation of research into tools that materially improve mental health assessment at scale.

We believe the most valuable skill in this role isn’t simply technical ability — it’s the ability to ask better questions. You’ll be someone who can identify what matters, cut through noise, challenge conventional assumptions, and design research that leads to genuine clinical impact.

What you’ll do

  • Conduct fundamental R&D in psychometrics and psychological assessment.
  • Develop and validate novel approaches to assessment, including behavioural tasks and AI-enabled methodologies.
  • Lead NovoPsych’s research program, shaping priorities, standards, and output quality.
  • Translate research into clinically usable, high-impact tools (not just papers).
  • Mentor and collaborate with researchers and technical staff to build a high-performing research function.
  • Drive publication-quality work while balancing speed, pragmatism, and product relevance.
  • Consider market opportunities to translate research into clinical tools

You’ll thrive here if you…

  • Have outgrown or move to fast for traditional academic pathways and want your work to have global clinical impact.
  • Enjoy pressure, pace, and high standards — and you stay calm when the work is hard.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to master conventional wisdom and the courage to question it.
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity, and can bring order to messy real-world data and problems.
  • Think like a scientist, but act like a builder.

Selection criteria

  • PhD in psychology, psychometrics, or a related field.
  • Registration as a psychologist or psychiatrist (or other strong clinical alignment).
  • Clinical experience related to psychological assessment.
  • A track record of publishing high-quality research (peer-reviewed, impactful, and methodologically rigorous).
  • Strategic and big picture thinking
  • Strong quantitative capability: data analysis, modelling, and inference.
  • Advanced computer skills, including demonstrated use of AI in research activities (e.g., workflows, analysis, methodology, prototyping).
  • Tech first problem solving, with people first focus.

What we offer

  • A world-class research platform with real-world clinical reach.
  • Great research team: https://novopsych.com/research-and-development/
  • Work at the cutting edge of innovation in psychological assessment and measurement.
  • Competitive compensation commensurate with seniority and impact.
  • Opportunity to lead and build a hard-hitting research team.
  • Work-from-home flexibility and autonomy, with strong organisational support.

How to apply

Please apply with your email with your Resume that includes a cover letter outlining:

  1. one research project you’re proud of and why it mattered, and

  2. the best question you think the field of psychological assessment should be asking next
  3. key attributes or achievements that demonstrate your exceptional ability
