Mid-to-Late Career Psychologists Looking for a Private Practice to Call Home

Are you looking for an exceptional private practice to call home?

Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology is an established group psychology practice with three inner-Melbourne locations and a carefully selected team of experienced clinicians.

We are currently looking for mid-to-late career psychologists and couples therapists who would like to work with us for two or more days per week in person.

We provide an exceptional working environment so that our therapists can do their best work with clients.

At a glance

  • 11 years established
  • Strong referral base
  • Full admin support
  • Thoughtful client matching
  • Autonomy with genuine support
  • Experienced, settled clinical team
  • Regular opportunities for learning, consultation and connection
  • Three inner-Melbourne locations

Here’s a little bit about us

Who we are

Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology was founded on the idea that for psychologists to do their best work with clients, they also need to be well supported.

More than a decade later, that idea still sits at the centre of the practice.

We are not trying to be everything to everyone. We have chosen to stay focused on what we do well: providing thoughtful, high-quality therapy to adults and couples.

What makes IMCP different

Autonomy without isolation

Private practice should offer freedom. But it should not leave therapists feeling alone.

At IMCP, therapists have genuine autonomy over their clinical work, fees, schedule and caseload, while also being part of a thoughtful and responsive practice.

Our role is to provide the conditions that allow you to do your work well: strong referral pathways, full admin support, clear systems, meaningful clinical connection and a skilled Support Team who get to know you and your work over time and who care.

We also take clinical governance seriously. Our processes are regularly reviewed and refined through a therapeutic lens, so that decisions are guided by client care, therapist wellbeing, ethical practice and evolving best-practice standards.

Who we work with

We provide psychological therapy for adults and couples.

We do not provide court reports, single assessments, crisis services or services through third parties such as NDIS or TAC.

The kind of therapist we’re looking for

We are looking for experienced therapists who are clinically confident, thoughtful about their scope and interested in making a considered move into a stable, high-quality private practice.

This role is likely to suit someone who:

  • Is in the mid-to-late stage of their career
  • Can work with us for two or more days per week
  • Wants to work primarily in person from one or more of our clinic locations
  • Values autonomy but wants to balance this with connecting with colleagues
  • Recognises that learning and reflection is lifelong in our field
  • Wants to focus on client work rather than running the administrative side of a solo practice

We know joining a practice is a significant professional decision. We are interested in therapists who want to take the time to understand whether there is a genuine fit, in both directions.

How we can support you

Starting in a new practice is a big step, even for experienced clinicians.

As part of joining IMCP, you will receive:

  • A clear onboarding process with our Support Team Manager
  • Ongoing support to understand our systems and processes
  • Monthly check-ins wiht our director for the first three months as you get to know the ropes
  • The option of an informal buddy from within the team
  • The option of speaking with our clinic accountant about GST, superannuation and tax compliance

We are careful about who joins our team, and when we invite someone in, we do this wholeheartedly.

Our Support Team

Full admin support

Our Support Team is one of the things therapists value most about working at IMCP.

We have spent years building a team and systems that allow therapists to focus more fully on their clinical work. Our Support Team is warm, capable and genuinely invested in the experience of both clients and therapists.

They assist with:

  • Intake enquiries
  • Appointment bookings and changes
  • Payments
  • Medicare rebates
  • Cancellation lists
  • Reschedules
  • Current client follow-ups
  • Late payment and no-show follow-up
  • Diary support
  • Client communication
  • Day-to-day practice questions
  • Providing a boundary between you and clients by managing client emails (when sent through our client software)

Therapists can still manage their own client bookings if they prefer that level of autonomy. The point is that you are not left to run a mini practice inside our practice.

Thoughtful client matching

We pride ourselves on getting to know our clinicians over time.

Our Support Team develops a strong understanding of each therapist’s clinical interests, style, preferences, availability and scope. We do not simply fill available appointment times. We consider what a client is looking for and which therapist may be a good fit.

You always have autonomy to decide whether a referral is within your scope, interest and capacity.

Working in person and using Telehealth

Our preference is for therapists to work primarily in person from one or more of our clinic locations.

There is still flexibility to include Telehealth within your week, and we offer a competitive 35% service fee for Telehealth sessions conducted from home.

However, we are not currently recruiting for Telehealth-only roles, as client demand is strongest for in-person appointments.

For days when you see clients from one of our clinics, our service fee is currently 40.5%.

Learning, professional development and collegiality

We are a practice of experienced clinicians, but we do not see experience as the end point of learning.

Our learning culture is shaped by the questions and gaps that emerge within the team. We use team feedback to plan workshops and facilitated discussions that feel relevant to the work our therapists are actually doing.

In 2026, our team calendar includes:

A workshop on neuroaffirming care with Marie Camin
An OCD workshop with Dr Claire Ahern and Dr Kit Casey
A Q&A on adapting approaches and tools for autistic clients with Melody Howlett
A guest Q&A on perimenopause and menopause with Dr Yvonne McCartney
A guest Q&A on medication with Dr Christabel Crompton
A Q&A on grief and loss with Rachael Torcasio
A Q&A on working with clients using an attachment lens with Andrew Mottram
Peer group supervision
Team meetings
Book club
A team pot luck dinner
Our end-of-year gathering

Most of these opportunities are optional, but they are an important part of our culture.

Our spaces

We care about the physical environment because therapy is deeply influenced by the spaces in which it happens.

Our consulting rooms are warm, calm and filled with character. Therapists and clients often tell us they feel settled when they arrive.

Our director

Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology was founded by Dr Jacqueline Baulch, a clinical psychologist and Board Approved Supervisor.

Jacqueline created IMCP with the aim of building a practice where therapists could do strong clinical work in a sustainable way. Jacqueline is responsive, passionate and closely connected to the direction and values of the practice.

What our therapists say

We can describe the practice, but the clearest picture often comes from the therapists who work here.

Melody Howlett, Couples Therapist

Since joining the team at IMCP, I have felt deeply supported, encouraged and respected as I finetune my own rhythms, processes, client preferences and boundaries in private practice.

Jacqueline has created a genuinely supportive environment with thoughtful opportunities for collaboration, social connection and professional development. The Support Team work incredibly hard to understand how individual practitioners work, their processes and their ideal clients.

Their warm and boundaried client support, along with established referral networks, means I am able to focus on the practice side with less administrative burden. I also deeply value the flexibility and autonomy I have over my calendar, which clients I take on and when I am at capacity.

I had explored other practice spaces and teams before joining IMCP, and they had not felt right. I am very glad I joined IMCP, and that my positive impression from my first interview with Jacqueline was so spot on.

Jane Stewart, Psychologist

Having worked in the community sector for the majority of my career in psychology, I was initially very nervous to commence in private practice.

Since my first meeting with Jacqueline, I have felt thoroughly supported and encouraged to make this transition. IMCP has provided me with the perfect balance of flexibility and autonomy as a clinician, while also feeling supported by Jacqueline, the Support Team and other clinicians within the team.

I value the consultative referral process, which ensures clients are referred appropriately based on my skills and strengths, as well as considering client needs. I also appreciate the warm and calm clinic spaces, regular opportunities for professional development and peer support, and the encouragement to maintain my own wellbeing.

I am so grateful that IMCP has enabled me to experience a smooth and rewarding transition into private practice.

Dr Sue Baker

Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology has provided me with an exceptional introduction to private practice and a supportive atmosphere for further cultivating my clinical skills.

Since joining the practice, I have experienced a comprehensive orientation made possible through the guidance and knowledge of the Support Team, as well as Jacqueline’s warm, responsive and intentional approach as director.

The practice has an extensive referral base and a strong collegial environment that supports team building and professional development.

I count myself lucky to be part of such a wonderful team and would highly recommend this practice to psychologists wanting to expand their clinical practice within a supportive and thoughtful environment.

Alice Tsai, Clinical Psychologist

Inner Melbourne Clinical Psychology made my transition into private practice a seamless one, even during the uncertainty of 2020.

Jacqueline runs an ethically operated practice that prioritises the wellbeing of both clients and psychologists. I truly appreciate that I have freedom to choose how I work, my schedule, the types of clients I see and my client fees.

This autonomy is balanced with knowing that Jacqueline is approachable and available to touch base if issues arise. It has also been incredibly valuable to be connected to a team of therapists within a supportive and positive culture.

The workshops, group supervision and facilitated discussions on offer mean I never feel lacking in opportunities to learn and grow as a clinician. We also have a dedicated, responsive and professional Support Team helping with client intake, client matching, administration and the smooth running of the practice.

I feel very lucky to be part of IMCP and would recommend it to other therapists looking to join a group practice.

If you think you’d be a good match for our team, we’d love to hear from you

Please send through your resume and a cover letter. Bear in mind that we are currently only considering applications from psychologists and couples therapists who are mid to late career, interested in seeing clients two or more days a week and happy to see clients in person at least one of those days.
